Internet marketing. Two words that elicits either heavenly or hellish thoughts among modern SME business owners and marketers.
While a few idolise the concept and find it to be divinely-inspiring. Many others are simply confused and/or scared by it & envy those who have enhanced their ROI from it.

However, you cannot argue with the fact that digital marketing, as we know it as today, will be the fundamentals of what marketing will consists of in the future.
Within my experiences of internet marketing, there is one takeaway that I have learnt, that I am about to share with you...
Brands need to embrace change and this starts from being innovative through implementing internet marketing within their promotional strategies. If not brands die - take Toys R Us & Blockbuster for starters!

1. Thou shalt curate an internet marketing strategy
I think it goes without saying, a strategy is imperative for ambitious entrepreneurs.
If you are somebody that hasn't bothered with a strategy to date, I suggest you alter that ideology. You'll be destined for failure.
I appreciate that this may be perceived to be too fundamental to discuss. However, from working with clients, I have been shocked by their pure neglect towards implementing a strategy.
The problem with business owners that haven't even contemplated a strategy for their business, expect results straight away from internet marketing.
Boom! Reality strikes.
They wonder why it hasn't worked and then dismiss that internet marketing is a feasible investment.
Thereby, I feel it is crucial to reinforce the need of a strategy by placing it at my number 1 commandment for digital marketing success.
So how do you develop an internet marketing strategy?
You must address these pertinent questions:
- What will my monthly budget be for our digital spending?
- Which digital touchpoints should I be visible on?
- Who will oversee the execution and maintenance of our internet marketing strategies?
- How will we ensure that our branding stays consistent with our other advertising efforts?
- How will success be measured?
2. Thou shalt have a responsive website
In today's world, there is a high expectation by customers and search engines, that websites are responsive.
So why is this?
- Consumers now spend more than five hours a day on their smartphones (Source: Adweek)
- Up to 70% of web traffic happens on a mobile device (Source: CIODive)
- 89% of people are likely to recommend a brand after a positive brand experience on Mobile (Source: Google)
- 57% of users say they won’t recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile site (Source: socPub)
It is clear to see that websites now need to be responsive among different devices in order to be successful.
A “responsive” website design basically means that a website conforms appropriately to whatever screen size and device someone is viewing it on.
As such, this enhances the user experience (UX) and will reduce your bounce rate.
3. Thou shalt optimise images
The utilisation of images throughout internet marketing is widely accepted.
Current data supports this.
A contemporary study found that three days after consumers were shown visual stimuli of an image. The consumers retained on average 65% of the information that was visible within the image.
The conclusion of this has been accepted by modern marketers. As within the past few years, marketers have come to accept that visual posts have an extremely positive impact on impressions, click-through rates, shares, and memorability.
4. Thou shalt implement video content marketing
Futuremore, video content marketing has the ability to outperform the use of images.
In recent times, as you have been scrolling through social media, I would put any wager on that you have been inundated to countless videos. These may be paid campaigns or organic posts.
As a matter of fact, Cisco forecasts that by the end of 2019, global Internet traffic from videos will make up 80% of all Internet traffic!
In particular, live videos attract a vast quantity of this traffic. It’s worth noting that on social media, live videos receive six times the engagement of non-live videos!
However, are videos good for business?
Well, this telling study seems to indicate so.
It revealed that four times as many consumers would rather watch a video about a product than to read about it.
I advise clients and fellow business owners that they should be implementing video content marketing within their campaigns.
These videos can consist of:
- New product launches
- Educational videos
- Live videos
- Plus many more...
5. Thou shalt invest in Social Media ads
With social media marketing, you can truly be visible on a huge customer touch point for the majority of target demographics.
Organic reach on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter & alternative social platforms is fantastic however recent algorithm changes on this social platform have made it increasingly challenging to achieve.
This is why boosted posts and advertisements are providing businesses more benefits than ever before!
The thing that I love about social media advertising. Is the capability it provides to marketers with its extensive targeting options.
We can tailor our ads to certain demographics and target our perferred audience based on their interests and everything else they tell the social platform.
6. Thou shalt blog
Throughout marcuslangmaid.com, you will find numerous blogs on the wonderful world of marketing.
But what is the reason for this?
Well in honesty, in today's digital world, consumers are seeking for information online.
My 'consumers' are business owners and students. I am provided a FREE service that informs their decisions are educates them.
However, businesses can utilise blogs to satisfy two main purposes:
Blogging is a facet of copywriting that aids the consumer's information search. While occasionally utilised as a selling technique.
Not only do blogs aid a brands' SEO by allowing them to rank for certain and carefully selected keywords. It also helps position businesses and/or individuals as experts in their industry.
They settle unanswered questions, drive traffic, generate leads, help boost social media presence, and they simply show that a business cares.
7. Thou shalt curate an email database
Are you actively engaging with your customers each week?
If you are not, you need to change this!
Email marketing is arguably, one of the most beneficial internet marketing tools for SMEs.
In fact, some research conducted by Salesforce, indicate that 69% of US internet users rather communicate with businesses through email. As such, email allows businesses to have a consistent (and often personalised) engagement with a core group of followers.
Your email campaigns can subsequently highlight:
- Company news
- Educate about products and services
- Provide any relevant information
- Promote current offers that will help drive people to your website and store
8. Thou shalt not spend an entire budget on internet marketing
Internet marketing is a contemporary facet of the generalisation of marketing.
Many business owners embrace internet marketing whereas many others are sceptical.
However, one advantage of digital marketing strategies remains constant.
It does not fail to deliver results - when conducted correctly!
On the contrary, internet marketing does have its limitations, just like anything else.
Due to digitel marketing being the latest 'shiny new toy' for marketers. The cyberspace is over-concentrated and overcrowded.
As such, consumers can deem a brand's online marketing techniques to be impersonal and sometimes, untrustworthy.
Now don't jump me - saying that I am contradicting myself through promoting digital marketing but also slating it. I am not announcing these facts in attempt to undermine the use of internet marketing.
The pitfalls are merely to alert business owners not the put all their eggs in one basket.
You should be utilising digital marketing but incorporating another advertising medium that fits within the marketing mix.
9. Thou shalt understand online analytics
Mesauring internet marketing success is one that is complex.
It is possible however it can be tricky.
Google Analytics (GA) is a fantastic tool used by websites that help to decipher and interpret how much traffic is being generated to the website and the source the traffic originates from.
Using GA can reinforce informed decisions and determine certain areas of digital strategies that need revisiting.
10. Thou shalt employ a competent internet marketing team
Internet marketing often consumes a lot of time. Time that you could spend running the business that you love and take great pride in.
As a matter of fact, Social Media Today, claims that “more than 60% of digital marketers report spending at least 6 hours per day on their digital marketing efforts, while about one in three digital marketers say that they spend 11+ hours working online every day.”
That is a lot of time.
So what is the solution to combat these time constraints?
You hire a fully dedicated digital marketing agency.
